This drama is inspired by the life of South Korean Olympic weightlifter gold-medalist Jang Mi Ran and it’s about college athletes who fighting for their dreams and finding love. Kim Bok Joo is a student in Hanwool College of Physical Education. She has shown strength like no other since she was a child as influenced by her former weightlifter father. She looks thoughtless at a first glance, but inside she’s as fragile as glass and has deep recognition. Jung Joon Hyeong is Kim Bok Joo’s best friend. He is a born swimmer but ever since he was disqualified from his first international event, he suffers from ‘start trauma’. Along with Kim Bok Joo, he overcomes his troubles and finds his dream and love. Song Shi Ho is a rhythm gymnast who also attends Hanwool College of Physical Education. She started gymnastics since she was 5 and won the Asian Games at the age of 18. She’s always been the best since then but mental pressure caused her to break up with Jung Joon Hyung and regret it. 7 out of 10 stars
I watched Weightlifting Fairy, Kim Bok Joo (WFKBJ) as soon as the subtitles for the first episode came out. Yes, episode one palang ang nailalabas ng MBC, nag-abang na ako. I actually heard about this drama from my church-mates na Kdrama addicts rin. Then ayun, nag-try nga akong manood ng WFKBJ.
The first thing that really caught my eye was the main leads–Lee Sung Kyung and Nam Joo Hyuk. You might not agree with me, but I really wondered why they paired Nam Joo Hyuk up with Lee Sung Kyung. Lee Sung Kyung is not your ideal girl, and for me, I thought that it was a very big challenge for the producers to make this a hit since ang panglaban lang talaga nila ay si Nam Joo Hyuk. Honest opinion lang naman. I’m not saying na hindi maganda si Lee Sung Kyung, it’s just that she’s different from your typical Korean drama actresses (and yes, that’s actually good).
Actually, I gave seven out of ten stars to this drama kasi I looooooooooove the leads pero plot-wise, tagilid. The drama was verily entertaining dahil light lang, pero wala kasi siyang “boom” event. Like, walang mouth-hanging plot twists na talagang hinahanap ng lahat ng Kdrama fantards. I think, iyong pinaka-twist na nitong drama is iyong nalaman na galing pala si Kim Bok Joo and Jung Joon Hyung sa iisang school back when they were still kids (and this was revealed wayyyy sooner than I thought).
Weightlifting Fairy, Kim Bok Joo is actually a good drama for new Kdrama fans. If nagsisimula ka palang na mag-explore sa mundo ng Korean dramas, you probably would love this one and rate this with a 10/10. Pero if marami ka nang napanood, tapos iyong napanood mo pang mga drama is ‘yung talagang mga grabe ang twists, I think you’d be wanting and expecting for more from this one.
Pero characters-wise, I’ll rate this with a 10/10. I actually didn’t expect that NJH and LSK would actually look so so so good together. Bagay na bagay kasi sila, and I’m glad that my ship sailed and naging sila nga in real life.
Lee Sung Kyung was too adorable, as well. Ang cute-cute niya! And her character in WFKBJ suits her very well. Bagay na bagay talaga siyang maging maldita. HAHA. Tapos kapag umiiyak siya, nakakahawa! Like everytime she cried, naiiyak rin talaga ako. Kudos.
Si Nam Joo Hyuk naman, bago sa paningin ko. Si Lee Sung Kyung kasi, nakita ko na sa Doctors before. I’m no pro but I’d say that he really did well. ‘Yung mga smirks niya and everything, killer! Napaka-gwapo! Not to mention that he’s got a fine built rin. Pero, I don’t think that heavy roles would suit him well. Para siyang counterpart ni Yoo Seung Ho. Bagay sakan’ya iyong mga ganito lang. Bebe lang, tapos wala masyadong extreme na emotions.
But the cinematography for this drama was really nice, too. Pastel. Very refreshing talaga siyang panoorin. Light lang. Nakakagaan ng mood. And I think that that was one of the reasons why this drama became a hit. Good starter talaga siya for beginners kasi.
All in all, this drama was good. Sakto lang. If gusto mong magpawala ng stress, you have to watch this drama. And yes, I fully recommend this drama for you guys to watch. Pero since everyone in town was already talking about this, I think bilang nalang iyong mga taong hindi pa nakakanood nito. HAHAHAHA. This drama was all about growing-up and dealing with adolescence problems, and this drama was highly recommended for teenagers to watch.
