Bandwagons in Korean Dramas

Bandwagons in Korean Dramas

So, ayon. Ang dami ko kasing nababasa na tweets and reactions about this so-called ‘bandwagon fans’ sa Twitter, kaya I decided to give voice to my own opinion about the issue. Tsaka, feel ko na right ko rin naman ‘to since part rin naman ako ng hallyu wave.

So ayun nga. I’ve read a looooot of tweets about this from my mutuals (from different fandoms), and their posts somehow had me triggered to the point that I also felt the urge to say something about this.

Naging K-pop fan kasi ako n’ong 2014. However, I am already watching Korean dramas even before I entered the K-pop world. Ibig sabihin, mas una kong pinagpantasyahan sina Lee Min Ho at Jang Geun Suk kaysa sa EXO. Ganern. My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, 49 Days, To The Beautiful You, You’re Beautiful, City Hunter, Boys Over Flowers, and Marry Me, Mary are only some of the dramas I’ve watched when I was still a little kid.

Be that as it may, I used to be one of those people who were mocked because I happened to like Korean dramas. People used to jeer at me because I am watching things that I do not understand since Korean is not my first language.

“Ano ba ‘yang pinapanood mo, alien?” was the phrase that the people around me say a lot.

And that is why the hallyu community feels so alien to me right now. In just a blink of an eye, people started to appreciate the things that they mocked other people for before. Before I even knew it, tinatawag na rin nilang ‘oppa’ ‘yung mga lalaki ko. In just a split second, puro ‘annyeong’, ‘mianhae’, tsaka ‘kamsahamnida’ na ‘yung mga naririnig ko sa paligid ko.

Napaka-hypocritical. Nakakasuka.

But let me make myself clear.

However, it is the bandwagon fans that I detest. But before I say more about them, let me introduce them to you first. Dejk.

Bandwagon Fans (n.)
(1.) People who are joined the hallyu wave because Korean dramas are becoming mainstream.  (2.) People who are claiming that they are ‘Korean drama enthusiasts’ even though they have only watched the most popular Korean dramas. (3.) People who are watching Korean dramas for their ‘oppas’. (4.) People who does the finger-heart sign, stupidly thinking that the meaning of that sign was ‘oppa’.

Let me address this one by one.

First, the mainstream people. ‘Yung mga gan’on ba.

And do you guys know what makes them so annoying? Kasi hindi naman nila talaga naa-appreciate ‘yung art within Korean dramas talaga. They only watch because they want to be part of what’s conventional and no, I don’t think it’s beautiful. There are a lot of underrated Korean dramas pero para sakanila, kung ano ang sikat, iyon lang ang maganda. And some people are actually using Korean dramas to be famous, wtf.

With these kind of people I just wanna–

Second, the so-called Korean drama enthusiasts.

There was this one instance when I read something on Facebook. And her friend was like, “Oo nga, eh. Pero mas bet ko siya sa Coffee Prince.” And she replied, saying na sa Train to Busan lang naman daw nadiscover si Gong Yoo and the lead character in Coffee Prince is different kasi luma na. HAHAHA! I literally laughed my ass out at her stupidity.

Kasi naman, if you’re a new fan, keep it low! If new fan ka, okay lang naman if hindi mo talaga alam lahat kasi you won’t learn everything you need to know overnight. So, if hindi alam, ‘wag mahihiyang magsabi na ‘hindi ko alam’, kasi admitting that you don’t know something is much, much better than actually pretending to know something that you don’t.

Third, the oppa is life type of fans.

So I really hate this type of people kasi nakakainis naman talaga. OPPA MY ASS. Oppakan ko kayo, char. Kasi, for the record, the word ‘oppa’ or ‘오빠’ in Hangul is not ‘handsome’ when translated to English. HINDI PO ‘POGI’ O ‘GWAPO’ ANG IBIG SABIHIN NG OPPA. Rather than that, ‘oppa’ is used to refer to the older males if you are a female. I mean, I know that the leads and the characters of a drama is also a factor of what makes a drama more beautiful, but you’re ‘oppas’ shouldn’t be like the main reason for you to watch it.

Next, the nakikiuso lang.

For me, this is the most irritating people I’ve ever seen.

Finger-hearts pa more! Tapos kapag tinanong mo kung anong ibig-sabihin nung finger hearts, sasabihin sa’yo, ‘oppa’?! HAHAHAHAHA, oppa mo ‘to, ate girl!

Well my point here is this; YOU DON’T HAVE TO LIKE KOREAN DRAMAS IF YOU DON’T WANT TO. No one’s forcing you, okay? Balik tayo sa sinabi ko kanina, na if you’re only watching Korean dramas just because you want to be ‘in’, then nagajuseyo. ‘Wag mo ‘kong fini-finger hearts d’yan kasi hindi mo naman ikina-cool ‘yan. Don’t Kdrama is life me if hindi naman genuine ‘yung pagkagusto mo sa Kdrama. Arra?

Ganito kasi ‘yan. Ako, personally, I really want everyone to notice the beauty in Korean dramas.

Ayoko sa bandwagon fans not because I am being downright selfish and closed-minded, but because having them in the hallyu wave is like letting outsiders invade my comfort zone. Korean dramas have always been my comfort zone, kaya parang ang pangit na may mga kung anong fans lang na biglang papasok tapos mang-aano lang.

Pero ayon, since I can’t do anything about what’s already happening naman, I just hope that these bandwagon fans would just be converted into real fans para mas masaya. Kasi the hallyu community is welcome naman for new fans, pero it’s the bandwagon fans naman kasi that we cannot tolerate.

So ayon. I know that some people may or may not agree on me on this, but I hope that I’ve stayed on my point.

P.S. To all bandwagon fans out there,

GIGIL AKO SAINYO! HAHAHAHA!
